As a manufacturer and a supplier you need to be familiar with the following types of inland freight: --- LTL Less-Truck-Load - refers to a relatively small shipment that is consolidated in a trailer and goes through several terminals until it gets to its final destination point. Therefore, the transit time for LTL deliveries might be longer than FTL. For all that, it is recommended that pieces are packed into crates or shrink-wrapped and put on pallets for easy handling and to create a smaller piece count and to secure the safety of the commodity. LTL service is best used for local pick-ups and distribution. --- FTL Full-Truck-Load or Dedicated Truck - refers to large loads of shipments enough to fill the whole trailer which length can vary from 26' to 53'. FTL service covers shorter routes as the freight leaves the place of origin with one destination, avoiding the processing through transit terminals. This type of inland freight is best used to transport larger volumes of freight to the nearest stock centers for local distribution by using LTL services. Another routine for FTL deliveries would be the local relocation of a substantially large breakbulk quantity from the supplier's warehouse to the port of export. --- Container Haulage - In common practice this service is used for cargo that is scheduled to go by ocean freight and for local trucks to perform container haulage with the following routes: 1. export: pulling an empty container from the port, delivering it to the shipper's warehouse for the loading procedures, and returning the loaded container back to the port; 2. import: the reversed order of the container haulage for the export - pulling the arrived container from CFS, delivering it to the consignee's facilities for unloading procedures, and returning the empty container back to the carrier's Container Yard. And you should be familiar with the following two methods of loading: --- "Live Load" - The truck driver delivers the empty container and waits till the shipment is securely loaded and all seals are placed. With the live load the time is very limited and the additional charges from $65 up to $100 per hour (depending on the carrier) will be applied once you exceed the first two to three hour free time limit. For the reasons of preventing the surcharges, you should always be prepared for the loading work and have all necessary manpower, equipment and materials needed. --- "Drop-and-Pick - The truck driver delivers and leaves the empty container at the place of loading for the days the container was released for free of demurrage charge. This method allows the shipper to take all required time to complete the loading, blocking & bracing of the shipment inside of the container. Because of the mileage the trucks cover, the charge for the container haulage services are usually slightly higher than for the live load option. It is always better to consider the distance between the place of loading and the port before choosing the appropriate procedure of Ex-Works. It is important to make sure that the facilities are appropriate for loading procedures. A dock with a ramp, loading equipment and labor has to be provided if necessary. Inappropriate and unprepared loading facilities can lead the shipper to substantial losses and inconveniences. In other words, the shipper is fully responsible for the acceptance of the empty container. |
